A Bag of Nails
Spiritual Story by Unknown
There once was a young girl who wasn’t very nice. The girl's mother wanted to teach her a lesson, so she gave her a bag of nails and told her that every time she said something or did something that wasn’t nice, or hurt someone’s feelings, she must hammer a nail into their wooden fence.

On the first day of the lesson, the little girl had driven 37 nails into the fence. She was very rude and disrespectful that day!

Over the course of the next few weeks, the little girl began to improve her ways, so she was hammering fewer nails into the fence.

It wasn't long before the little girl discovered it was easier to hold her tongue and to be nice  than to drive those nails into the fence.

Then, the day finally came when the little girl didn't say or do anything mean even once, and she became so proud of herself, she couldn't wait to tell her mother.

Very pleased, her mother suggested that the girl now pull out one nail for each day that she could be nice and not say or do anything that hurt someone else.

Several weeks went by and the day finally came when the young girl was able to tell her mother that all the nails were gone.

Very gently, the mother took her daughter by the hand and led her to the fence.

"You have done very well, my daughter," she smiled, "but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same."

The little girl listened carefully as her mother continued to speak.

"When you say and do things that aren’t nice, they leave permanent scars just like these. And no matter how many times you say you're sorry, the wounds will still be there."

The little girl then understood how powerful her words were. She looked up at her mother and said, “I hope you can forgive me mother for the holes I put in you.”
“Of course I can,” said the mother.
